Caring for Young Eyes at Bright Eyes Optics

Did you know that 80% of learning happens through your child’s eyes? Vision plays a crucial role in your child’s development, from reading and writing to playing and exploring the world around them. That’s why we specialise in comprehensive children’s eye care, offering gentle and engaging eye exams tailored specifically for young eyes.

We know the idea of an eye exam can be a little daunting for kids, so we create a fun, relaxed, and supportive environment. Our team uses child-friendly tools and techniques to make the process smooth and stress-free, for both kids and parents.

You’re welcome to stay with your child throughout the exam, which includes checking eye movement, focus, coordination, and overall eye health.

Children’s Eye Examinations

Common Childhood Eye Conditions

Myopia

Near-sightedness: A condition when viewing objects in the distance is blurry. This usually develops at school age and can progress as they get older.

Myopia Control

Hyperopia

Far-sightedness: When viewing objects up close, they are not in focus.

Amblyopia

Also known as a ‘Lazy Eye’, is a developmental condition where one eye fails to achieve normal visual clarity, resulting in reduced vision in that eye. The earlier it's detected, the more effective the treatment tends to be.

Astigmatism

Is a common vision condition that causes blurred or distorted vision in children. It happens when the cornea has an irregular shape, preventing light from focusing properly on the retina. This can be corrected by glasses.

What to watch out for

Children don’t always realise, or say, when they’re having trouble seeing. As a parent, here are some common signs of potential vision problems:

  • Squinting, closing one eye, or tilting the head to focus

  • Headaches or eye strain, especially after reading or screen time

  • Frequent eye rubbing

  • Sitting too close to the TV or holding books very near

  • Avoiding reading, drawing, or other close-up tasks

  • Struggling in school or appearing inattentive

If you’ve noticed any of these signs, it may be time to book a comprehensive eye exam for your child. Early detection is key to supporting their learning, confidence, and long-term visual health.
